I’m so excited to reveal the cover for mine and Deanna’s new paranormal young adult story. The cover was designed by Winyan Press illustrator Alex Marin who did another amazing job in portraying the feel of the book with Parker Joseph front and center.
Let me tell you a little about the formation of this story. The premise came to me one day after a discussion I had with someone about the concept of ‘gifts of discernment’. For those unfamiliar with the term, it is a common ideal in many religions, where the individual with this gift, is able to see the evil in others. Sometimes that is visual, auditory, or simply a sixth sense about the truth of someone’s words. In its pure religious form, the individual can basically see the evil in people and is able to warn others about the devil’s presence.
After my conversation, I thought a lot about this concept and how it fit within my cultural and family frame of mind. My mother has some form of it, I do, and most of my children do as well. In fact, it is quite common within my culture. As I thought and dreamt about this concept, a story started to form in my head. I thought about my youngest daughter and how she would see spirits and would have ‘ghost friends’. Pretty soon, I had something to work with. Of course, in my initial incarnation of the story it was very dark, but Deanna kept that in check. She often joked that if it wasn’t for her, I would have killed everyone in the story. She’s probably right about that 🙂 After lengthy talks with my daughter to and from her dance classes, we mapped out a series of books, that we entitled The Diakrisis Tales, after the Greek word for discernment.
The Diakrisis Tales will follow an adolescent girl named Parker Joseph who discovers when she moves to a new town that she is more than what she seems and that it is only through her ‘gifts’ that she can bring peace to not only her small town but to the world as well. Each stand alone book will follow Parker on a new adventure.
In this first book we meet 16 year old Parker Joseph, she is your typical teenager who is thrust into a new situation. She didn’t want to leave her hometown of Lincoln, Nebraska for Grieselton, Georgia but she had to. She now has to get used to a new town, a new school, and new friends. What she never expected was that her new home would trigger something in her that would shake her entire world. Is she up to the task?
Sage Joseph is Parker’s mother and the owner of Native Barista. She is strong and independent and confident that moving to Georgia was the right decision for her family but, when she arrives she isn’t so sure. She is aware that there is something going on with her daughter but doesn’t know exactly what it is. Will she be able to help her daughter or will she hinder Parker’s destiny?
Ophelia Imamu is the local fortune teller and witch doctor, according to some. She has been protecting the town of Grieselton for many decades, at great cost. She knows that the evil is growing and that she must prepare Parker for what’s to come. Will she have enough time to teach her what she needs to know before it’s too late?
This story is so special to me, mostly because Deanna and I worked so hard on it. We can’t wait to share it with everyone and hope that you all love it as much as we do. At this time we have five books mapped out in the series and have already finished half of book two. So, who’s ready for An Unexpected Gift: Book One in the Diakrisis Tales?

When Parker Joseph and her mother move to the small town of Grieselton, Georgia they discover that an evil presence is upon it. Unbeknownst to them, that evil will trigger a long dormant ‘gift’ within Parker, something that will allow her to not only detect evil in its many forms but combat it as well. Will she be able to harness this gift in time to save everyone or will she fall prey to the horror haunting her town?
